The gaming media got their first look at Civilization V in a cool, velvet-draped theater in the penthouse of 2K’s preview venue at GDC, entering beneath a sign bearing the game’s logo. In a twenty-minute demo, Civilization V producer Dennis Shirk showed off the new engine for the game, as well as some of the changes to diplomacy and combat.

The demo began with the first turn of a new civilization, showing off the beautiful, organic, inviting and hex-based game map. The first city was settled, warriors explored the world, and the new user interface was introduced.
Then a new save was loaded, showing the game hundreds of turns later. The empire had expanded to a few cities, and Dennis got to show off diplomacy with two of the major civilizations and a couple of city-states. The demonstration ended with a quick display of combat, as our soldiers routed the American armies from valuable high ground and lay siege to their capital.
We were excited to show off Civ V to the gaming media and we’re happy with their reports on the next great addition to the Civ franchise!
