The Artist's Choice

Civilization IV Lead Artist, Steve Ogden, talks about some of his favorite concept artwork from that game.

We made a lot of art for Civ IV. I mean tons of art, but there are a couple of pieces that stand out to me as awesome.

My favorite unit is the Chokonu! I really like the look of Asian armies to start with, and the repeating crossbow is an amazing weapon, so I was really happy that he was included in the game. Here’s the concept art and the model of the Chokonu as it appeared in the game:

When Civ IV was released in China, there was a limited edition figure of the Chokonu soldier that was bundled with the game box and I was lucky enough to get one of those!

My other favorite bit of art was a frame taken from the movie of the Great Pyramid under construction. It just said "Civ" to me – building something awesome that was going to last for ages. We had a couple of big prints made of that one, and I still have mine.

These weren’t the only pieces of Civ IV art that I liked. Sometimes, though, there’s a concept or idea that really sticks with you because it’s one of your interests or it means something special to you. I’m sure every other artist has their own favorite piece of art from the game. Which one is yours?
